Full description
A probable Civil War defended enclosure located on Kit Hill summit, consisting of a straight sided ploygonal enclosure with 5 sides of irregular length. Four of the 5 nodes have revetted circular stone bastions. The banks are flat topped and are up to 2.6m high. The area enclosed is 0.27ha. The bastions are in varying states of disrepair. The two on the west side were re-used as platforms in the 19th century for a windmill and a windmill vane and have stonework surviving beneath collapsed material. There is no trace of a ditch. The side appears to be a Civil War redoubt, similar in scale and plan to Little Dennis in St Anthony In Meneage (SW 7880 2565). There is no documentary evidence of a reboubt on Kit Hill. Further details are given in the CAU site report (h2, b2). The site was interpreted in 1987 as an industrial reservior but this is now disputed in the light of new information (h1, b1). There are several good air photographs of this site (p1-p3) and it was plotted as part of the NMP. Schedule monument consent granted for repairs 13.3.96 Details on file.
